brunswick stew extravaganza!

about once a year, the perry ladies get together to make a big pot of brunswick stew. it's a family tradition...nearly every aspect of this event!!

the pot itself has been handed down...the stirrer that you see aunt lisa holding was made (well, whittled, really) by a close family friend out of a dogwood tree limb...there's no odor in the wood to be transmitted to the food granny does a great job explaining all the steps to make sure we can continue the tradition!!

ooh...its almost ready!! roaster hens (the most moist meat...say that 5 times fast!), cabbage, onions, corn, tomatoes, mashed potatoes, rice, texas pete, worcestershire, sugar, salt, and butter...i can't tell you anymore than that...i'd be kicked out of the family :)

...and this is mama king's fan...still humming like it did in the 1920's! the kitchen gets a little warm after cooking that BIIIG pot of stew for so long...another part of the tradition
lots of good meals prepared today...i have my containers cooling on the counter right now getting ready to be stored in my freezer!
::
what did i learn today? it cost $54 dollars to make this HUGE pot of stew...we made an attempt to figure out how much that was per meal...it was more difficult than you would think...we had lots of different sized containers, how many cups is a meal? do you have anything else with the stew for your meal?...any who, our guess was to feed a family of 4, it costs about $5 per meal...$1.25 per person...incredible!...and then we also discussed adding more rice & potatoes to make it "go farther" and making it even cheaper per person...that's good eats, folks...and i can't think of a lesser expensive way to feed a family...wow...

That is one BIG STEW. It's so cool that you guys have a family tradition. I wish our family did something like that. I guess John and I will have to start one!!
